traffic haiku

traffic haiku

tar fills the road’s cracks.
he who laid these baking snakes,
sits in traffic too.

the three quiet lanes
can’t share the news, brought by tires,
with the traffic light.

we wait together,
watching for this light to change.
here i am all alone.

what must these crows think
of the fast automobiles
always on the ground?

watching up ahead,
i forget about my car.
my feet touch the road.

american mind games

american mind games

i chopped down my genealogy tree
to make a canoe,
to paddle up this river
with my toes in the water.
i wave my pipe
when i pass by ‘ol huck,
and share a potbelly chuckle,
one mutt to another mutt.
someone said, my ancestor’s are dead,
some people say, my way was murdered.
but i don’t need to know about that
to see sunshine on a paddle.
how could my ancestor’s have been killed
if this bow strikes a chord
in a crooked old river
every time i push forward?

freedom

i hammer at this deadening shell
of convenience
by forcing myself to
return the shopping cart
to its rightful place.
